Croatian Alen Halilović, who was viewed at the age of 16 as the 'Croatian Messi', is experiencing a challenging phase in his football career after becoming a free agent without a club since the end of his contract with Fortuna Sittard in June.
Halilović was once classified as one of the brightest rising talents in Croatian football, with expectations that he could become one of the players to carry the flag for the national team after Luka Modrić and Ivan Rakitić. However, his career did not develop in the way that was anticipated.
In 2014, Barcelona signed the player from GNK Dinamo Zagreb for around €5 million, reflecting the high hopes placed on him. However, his experience with the Catalan team did not go as expected, as he only managed to play for 28 minutes with the first team, with his only appearance coming against Elche in the Copa del Rey.
After leaving FC Barcelona in 2016, Halilović embarked on a long journey through European clubs, including Hamburg, Sporting Gijón, Las Palmas, Milan, Standard Liège, Heerenveen, Birmingham City, Reading, Rijeka, and Fortuna Sittard, becoming one of the players who moved between many clubs without finding the required stability.
Despite this, the 30-year-old player left some glimpses that reminded of his great talent, especially thanks to his left foot and individual skills. During his time with Sporting Gijón, he scored 5 goals and provided 9 assists over three seasons, but he was unable to maintain the consistency that could have reignited his career.
After more than a decade since emerging as one of Europe's top talents, Halilović currently finds himself without a club, awaiting a new opportunity that could allow him to revive a career that has not reached the level many expected at its outset.
