Scott McTominay has returned to training with SSC Napoli after a break following a procedure to treat a minor and benign heart rhythm disorder, marking the start of a new phase in his recovery as he prepares to return to matches.
Scott McTominay underwent surgery at Spire Hospital in Manchester earlier in September, before taking a two-week rest. The player returned to work in the gym at SSC Napoli's training center yesterday, before participating in his first training session today, according to the planned program for his return.
McTominay is expected to avoid physical contact in the initial phase, gradually integrating into team training over the coming days before receiving the green light to return to matches once his fitness is confirmed. His participation against Frosinone is currently being considered, but the final decision will depend on his physical condition, how he feels during training, and his response to returning to the normal rhythm of life as a football player.
Scott McTominay's return is a significant boost for SSC Napoli and coach Massimiliano Allegri, given the role the Scot played last season as a midfielder capable of scoring and creating danger. According to "Corriere dello Sport", SSC Napoli won 59% of their matches when McTominay was present, while their win percentage dropped in his absence.
Scott McTominay had participated in matches against Genoa and Inter at the start of the season before deciding to undergo surgery. Upon his return, Allegri will have additional options in midfield and may reconsider some of his tactical ideas, especially since SSC Napoli is currently relying on the duo of Billy Gilmour and Stanislav Lobotka for playmaking.
McTominay is expected to gradually regain his place, with the possibility of being used in multiple positions according to Allegri's needs, after proving his ability to provide the team with additional strength in midfield and reach the penalty area.
